Parents of young children are often tasked with making decisions regarding what types of supplements, vitamins, and medications to give their children. This happens in cases of illness, and even in day to day struggles like sleep, constipation, or teething. What if we told you there were options for your child, from birth, through his/her lifespan to help you with these illnesses and struggles?
Well, good news! There is! Homeopathy is a form of “traditional complementary and integrative medicine based on the core principle of ‘like treats like’”. We give a patient a substance in small doses, that when given to a healthy person would cause symptoms, to treat whatever their symptoms may be (Homeopathy Research Institute).

Homeopathy uses plant and animal products, as well as minerals and other raw substances, in order to formulate certain “remedies” which can be used for various ailments. One homeopathic, for example, is Arnica montana, which is often referred to as a homeopathic pain reliever. This homeopathic is great for inflammation, injuries, muscle aches, and discomfort. Arnica montana, and many other homeopathics, come in various forms. Most commonly we recommend pellets, which dissolve under the tongue or in liquids (i.e. breastmilk/formula, water). But these homeopathics also often come in creams or gels, which can be applied directly to the affected site.
While most supplements and vitamins provide more of a “one size fits all” approach, homeopathy is individualized. It takes into consideration specific symptoms, the time of day that symptoms occur, as well as laterality, meaning if the symptoms perhaps only affect one side of the body. With this information we are able to recommend treatments based on these symptoms, and are able to provide dosing recommendations for acute and chronic cases.
Dosing for homeopathy is based on localized symptoms versus more general symptoms. For example, a low dilution like 6C will treat something that you can point a finger at, such as a bug bite or a bruise. Medium solutions, such as 9C or 12C, will treat more general symptoms, such as muscle aches or pains that affect multiple areas of the body. A high dilution, like 15C or 30C, will treat multiple symptoms that may be occurring in various locations, such as a fever, as well as another behavioral or emotional symptom.
Another aspect of homeopathy that many are unaware of is that you cannot “overdose” on homeopathics. A good example of this is in the case of croup. Croup is often associated with respiratory illnesses such as parainfluenza, respiratory syncytial virus, and adenovirus. It causes a hallmark barking cough and stridor. The homeopathic most commonly prescribed for croup is Spongia tosta. This is often given in either a 15C or 30C dilution, dosed at 5 pellets under the tongue as needed every 3 to 4 hours. However, oftentimes with croup, more frequent dosing is needed. Therefore we may recommend giving it every 15-30 minutes, as needed, during an acute attack, and then spacing out thereafter.
Many of the providers at Natural Choice Pediatrics have taken a course to become Certified Clinical Homeopaths, and a few are currently enrolled, learning and dissecting all there is to know about homeopathics! Our goal as providers is to meet you where you are, provide you with the education needed to help your child thrive, and encourage you to also do your own research and self-learning to ensure you are making informed decisions.
